The current Mental Health Care approach is broken.
We must move away from a supply-driven mental health care system organized around what physicians do and move toward a patient-centered system organized around patient needs.
We must shift the focus from the volume and profitability of services provided—physician visits, hospitalizations, procedures, and tests—and focus on the patient’s highest achievable outcome.
We need to identify social determinants of health: meaning the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks, which play in the development and persistence of psychological distress.
It’s time for a fundamentally new strategy.
